Summary
- Two years ago, Oblivion and Fallout 3 remasters were leaked during the FTC’s case over the Microsoft Activision Blizzard King acquisition.
- With Oblivion Remastered now confirmed, thanks to screenshots being uploaded early on Virtuos’ website, fans are wondering if a Fallout 3 remaster is still in the cards.
- According to reputable insider NateTheHate2, it is, but “it’ll be a while before we see it.”
Yesterday, we got our first look at the Oblivion remake, thanks to a slip-up from developer Virtuos, finally putting years of rumour to bed. But it’s not the only classic Bethesda RPG making a comeback.
Oblivion Remastered was first reported in 2023 by a former Virtuos employee on Reddit (who has since been verified, as they claimed it was being developed under the codename “Altar”, which many of the screenshots from yesterday were labelled as) and then again in a leaked Bethesda document.
This document, an official release schedule for the next few years that surfaced in the FTC case over the Microsoft Activision Blizzard King acquisition, listed Oblivion Remastered for FY2022, but a Fallout 3 remaster was also included for FY2024. Many fans were already doubting, until yesterday, that the Oblivion remake existed, believing that it had been cancelled, and many have similar doubts about Fallout 3. According to reputable insider NateTheHate2, it still exists, but “it’ll be a while before we see it.”
How long exactly “a while” is, we don’t know. But we might be able to glean a timeline from the Title Release Schedule.
Bethesda planned to launch Fallout 3 Remaster the same year as The Elder Scrolls 6, which only began development in 2023. This tentpole sequel is likely still a few years away from release, which means that if the leaked schedule still holds water, so too is Fallout 3.
However, it’s also worth noting that Oblivion Remastered was set to launch in the same fiscal year as Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, ahead of the following year’s lineup of Doom Year Zero (now Doom: The Dark Ages) and a new The Elder Scrolls Online expansion (which we now know as Seasons of the Worm Cult). It missed that window, instead releasing in the fiscal year after Indiana Jones.
In 2023, the Title Release Schedule was already outdated. Two years later, even moreso. So, it’s hard to say when we can expect Fallout 3 — at the very least, it still appears to be in development.
