Summary
- A Minecraft Movie is finally here, and it has been a huge success for Warner Bros. and Mojang already.
- But it’s not the only adaptation on the horizon. Netflix announced ten months ago that it’s partnering with Sonic Prime studio WildBrain for a CG-animated series.
- While it’s mostly been forgotten, overshadowed by all the Jack Black memes, u/DependentStrong3960 brought it back into the spotlight with a popular Reddit post simply asking, ‘What happened to it?’
After ten years, the Minecraft movie is finally here, and it’s a huge success, making $300 million in its opening weekend alone. It’s even on track to dethrone Mario as the highest-grossing video game movie of all-time, and “there’s already talk” about a sequel.
But there’s another adaptation everyone keeps forgetting. Announced ten months ago, Mojang, Netflix, and WildBrain (the studio behind Sonic Prime) have partnered for a CG-animated series with an “original story” and “new characters”. We don’t know much else about the project right now, but it’s a far cry from the live-action spin Warner Bros. put on the game.
Minecraft, the bestselling adventure game of all time, will be reimagined as an animated series. Game creator Mojang Studios and Netflix are teaming up to build storylines with new characters populating the inspired, pixelated worlds that gamers have come to love.
“At Least We Still Have THIS To Look Forward To”
While the announcement came and went without making too much of a splash, eclipsed by the unending chicken jockey memes, it’s back in the spotlight thanks to u/DependentStrong3960, who simply asked, “Whatever happened to the Netflix Minecraft animated series?”
The answer is pretty boring: nothing. We weren’t shown any footage, so it’s likely still years away from being finished. After all, Mojang announced a partnership with Warner Bros. for the movie way back in 2014, when Notch was still around — mere months before Microsoft bought the company. We could be waiting a while.

Minecraft Has Become As Culturally Important As Mario In A Quarter Of The Time
Minecraft came out in 2011, but the movie shows just how dominant the franchise has become in that short time.
There’s no word yet on who will be cast or showrunner is, let alone a vague plot outline. “New characters” is the most we have to work with, which likely means we won’t see Steve or Alex; those two are being reserved for the movies. However, it does sound similar to Telltale’s episodic Story Mode, which was available on Netflix until 2022, using the sandbox as a backdrop to tell a completely original story, but a completely original story could mean anything. We’ll just have to wait and see.
Hopefully, it sticks the landing, and hopefully, it doesn’t take a decade to come out.
