Summary
- Beginning April 14, the PlayStation 5 console will be getting a price increase in Europe, the UK, Australia and New Zealand.
- “A challenging economic environment,” as well as “high inflation” are part of Sony’s rationale for the sudden increase.
- The news comes on the heels of an increase to PlayStation Plus, which was revealed on Friday.
With elements of the global market constantly shifting, Sony has announced some sweeping changes for its flagship PlayStation 5 console. More specifically, after four years on the market, the PS5 is increasing in price.
In a post shared to the PlayStation Blog, Sony attributed the price hike to “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates,” before calling it a “tough decision.”
The changes to the Recommended Retail Price of the PS5 are as follows:
Europe |
PS5 Digital Edition —€499.99 |
No change to Standard PS5 |
UK |
PS5 Digital Edition — £429.99 |
No change to Standard PS5 |
Australia |
Standard PS5 — AUD $829.95 |
PS5 Digital Edition — AUD $749.95 |
New Zealand |
Standard PS5 — NZD $949.95 |
PS5 Digital Edition — NZD $859.95 |
The price of the PlayStation 5 Pro, which was released late last year, will not be changed, per the announcement.
Elsewhere, the Disc Drive will be getting a decrease in RRP. The new prices are as follows:
Europe |
€79.99 |
UK |
£69.99 |
Australia |
AUD $124.95 |
New Zealand |
NZD $139.95 |
There won’t be much time to digest these new prices, as both the increases to the PS5 console and decreases to the disc drive accessory will go into effect tomorrow, April 14.

PlayStation Plus Will Also Be Getting A Price Increase
If Sunday’s announcement feels a bit like déjà vu, it’s not. On Friday, a similar announcement was made regarding PlayStation Plus, with more than 20 countries ultimately receiving a price increase.
For example, gamers in Brazil will now pay 546.90 Brazilian Reals for a 12-month PS Plus Extra subscription, representing a 12 percent increase. Converting that to USD is about $92, where North American subscribers pay $99.99 for a 12-month extra plan.
So far, North American customers have not been included in Sunday’s console increases or Friday’s PlayStation Plus increases.
