Borderlands Movie Nominated For Six Razzies, Including Worst Picture

Summary

  • The Borderlands movie has been nominated for six Razzies awards after a disastrous box office performance.
  • It’s up in five different categories, including Worst Picture and Director.
  • Jack Black, who starred as Claptrap, has even been put forward for three different Razzies, two of which are for Borderlands.

The Borderlands movie was a disaster. Slated by critics and audiences alike, it made just $32 million on a $150 million budget. Even Uwe Boll poked fun. Uwe Boll. The guy who directed Alone in the Dark and Far Cry.

Unsurprisingly then, it swept up a bunch of award nominations at the Razzies. As reported by PC Gamer, it was put forward for five different categories:

  • Worst Picture
  • Worst Director (Eli Roth)
  • Worst Actress (Cate Blanchett)
  • Worst Supporting Actor (Kevin Hart and Jack Black)
  • Screen Combo: Any Two Obnoxious Characters (But Especially Jack Black)

Jack Black, who starred as the annoying robot sidekick Claptrap, even picked up a third Razzie nomination for Worst Actor thanks to his performance in the Christmas comedy Dear Santa. Let’s hope Minecraft shakes out a bit better, eh? (it probably won’t, let’s be real).

Of the nine Razzies categories, Borderlands was nominated for five, meaning that it has been put forward for over half of the awards this year.

Its Competition

There’s some fierce competition at this year’s Razzies, although I doubt Randy Pitchford — who was hoping Borderlands would kickstart an entire cinematic universe — wants to win any. Lucky for him, there are some awful movies that might save Borderlands from even more embarassment.

In Worst Picture, it’s up against Joker: Folie a Deux (who is leading the charge in Razzies nominations this year), Madame Web, Megalopolis, and Reagan. I’m betting on Sony’s penultimate SUMC movie (ie Spider-Man without the Spider-Man part, the universe) for this one.

For Worst Actress, Cate Blanchett — who basically turned the ending of Tár into a reality with Borderlands — is up against Lady Gaga (Joker), Bryce Dallas Howard (Argylle), Dakota Johnson (Madame Web), and Jennifer Lopez (Atlas).

Kevin Hart and Jack Black, meanwhile, are up against Shia LaBeouf (Megalopolis), Tahar Rahim (Madame Web), and Jon Voight (for Megalopolis, Reagan, and Shadow Land & Strangers). With two Borderlands noms in one category, it’ll be a miracle if they avoid the win.

For Worst Director, Eli Roth faces off against S. J. Clarkson (Madame Web), Francis Ford Coppola (Megalopolis), Todd Phillips (Joker), and Jerry Seinfeld (Unfrosted). Lastly, in Screen Combo, Borderlands is up against the usual suspects of Unfrosted, Megalopolis, Joker, and Reagan. Like I said, fierce competition.

The Razzies take place on March 1, so it’s only a couple of months before the winners (or losers) are announced. Let’s see how many Borderlands takes home.
