If there’s one thing that Sonic the Hedgehog is known for, it’s for being the fastest thing alive, but he’s not the only speedy character around. Among the huge cast of characters that the games, shows, and comics have built up over the years, there are bound to be a few that rival Sonic’s incredible speed.

Between time-traveling hedgehogs, robotic facsimiles created to spread evil, and ruby-enhanced jackals who are bent on taking over the planet, there are plenty of characters who push the limits on who the fastest character in the series is.

Amy, Knuckles, And Tails

Three Reliable Friends

When you think of the fastest characters in the Sonic universe, you might not think of Sonic’s best friends, Amy, Knuckles, and Tails, but the three of them do manage to keep up with Sonic’s base speed more often than not, and that is pretty noteworthy on its own.

These three heroes all have their strengths, including incredible strength, leadership skills, and intelligence, while also moving at speeds that put other characters to shame. While it might be a product of needing to have characters keep up with Sonic in the games as he zips through Badnik-filled zones, their speed helps keep them ahead of any enemies coming their way.

Jet The Hawk

The Legendary Wind Master

An already fast character on his own, Jet the Hawk becomes even faster when he hops on his Extreme Gear, special anti-gravity skateboard-like devices that help Jet reach supersonic speeds. Jet is exceptionally prideful and can’t stand having lost his title to Sonic, but is also well known for being respectful when it comes to racing, even if he isn’t anywhere else.

Jet was first introduced in the 2006 Sonic Riders game, which had the cocky leader of the Babylon Rogues using his enhanced physical talents to pull off heists and commit crimes to fuel his racing obsession.

Silver The Hedgehog

Telekinetic Enhancements

One of the three main playable characters from Sonic The Hedgehog 2006, Silver the Hedgehog is not that fast on foot, being on par with Amy, Knuckles, and Tails for the most part, but when you consider his psychokinesis, his speed easily matches the top speed of other characters.

If Silver gets his hands on all seven Chaos Emeralds, he can transform into Super Silver, boosting all his abilities to unheard-of degrees, and enabling him to reach even higher speeds. While he might be the fastest thing from his timeline, there are still several characters faster than him in the main Sonic continuity.

Blaze The Cat

A Multidimensional Hero

Hailing from the Sol Dimension, Blaze the Cat is the princess of the Sol Empire and guardian of the Sol Emeralds, much like how Knuckles is the protector of the Chaos Emeralds. She is calm and collected, as befitting a princess, but beneath that calm exterior is a personality as fiery as her pyrokinesis.

She is incredibly powerful and one of the few characters to fight to a draw with Sonic. Blaze can enhance her speed with her flames, letting her achieve speeds that she wouldn’t be able to normally. If she gathers the seven Sol Emeralds, Blaze can transform into Burning Blaze, enhancing all her powers, including her pyrokinesis and speed, putting her in the running for the fastest character in the series.

Programmed For Speed

One of Sonic’s oldest archnemesis, the metallic monstrosity is designed to be the perfect rival to Sonic by Dr. Eggman, and is constantly evolving and learning new ways to take down his mortal foe. Metal Sonic can reach tremendous speeds thanks to a special engine placed in its core, allowing it to reach top speed in seconds, faster than Sonic can, more often than not.

Depending on the upgrades Metal Sonic has received, its top speed can surpass Sonic’s. Though being a machine, it often fails to fully defeat Sonic as the hero’s ingenuity and quick thinking lets him run circles around the robot.

Infinite

He Can Do Anything

The main villain of Sonic Forces, Infinite, is one of the more evil villains to join the evil pantheon from the series. Once a mercenary and thief of high renown, Infinite the Jackal was the leader of a military group until he set his sights on one of Eggman’s bases. After accidentally receiving a vision of a devastated planet after attacking the Phantom Ruby, he teamed up with Eggman to lead his army and take over the world.

On his own, Infinite isn’t fast, at least not more so than other speedy characters. But when he puts the powers of the Phantom Ruby to the test, Infinite can create virtual realities where his speed is incalculable, where even Sonic at his fastest can’t keep up. However, he can only maintain these illusions so long as the Phantom Ruby has power, and once it runs out, Infinite loses all those power-ups.

Shadow The Hedgehog

The Perfect Creation

Often called the ‘Ultimate Lifeform’ due to his immense power and incredible physical attributes, Shadow the Hedgehog is an artificial lifeform created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, Dr. Eggman’s grandfather, using DNA from an ancient and incredibly evil alien called Black Doom.

Shadow can attain incredible speed thanks to his Air Shoes, though that’s not the only tool at his disposal. Using Chaos Control, Shadow can manipulate time and space to his will, letting him teleport across great distances in an instant. Generally, he can only activate this ability with at least one Chaos Emerald in his possession, but once he gets all seven, he can transform into Super Shadow, enhancing all his powers to inconceivable heights.

Surprising no one, the fastest character around is Sonic the Hedgehog himself. With an innate ability to run at mind-bogglingly high speeds, Sonic has used this power to save the world time and time again from evil forces like Dr. Eggman and the Deadly Six.

What Sonic’s top speed is is up for heavy debate. In some games, it is mentioned that his top speed is Mach 1.2, or 920 MPH, making him faster than the speed of sound. Other times, he is shown moving at the speed of light. Sonic’s speed is equal to whatever is needed of him at the time, making him theoretically faster than any conceivable threat at any given time.
