Fans Petition For EA To Develop Star Wars: Battlefront 3

Summary

  • Fans are so desperate for DICE to make Star Wars: Battlefront 3 that they’re petitioning EA.
  • It’s unlikely to go anywhere, with DICE and several other studios focused on Battlefield 6, and the initial pitch being shot down due to licensing costs, but it speaks to a hunger for the series’ return.
  • Fans have been begging and speculating on the subreddit amidst its resurgence in players, so much that moderators have put restrictions on Battlefront 3 posts.

At this point, it feels as though Star Wars: Battlefront is cursed to never get a third game.

Free Radical Design began development on a sequel in 2006 to the original series, which would have implemented seamless ground to space battles, but after missing several deadlines, the project was cancelled. DICE, who revived the series with two reboots in 2015 and 2017, likewise pitched a third game after support for Battlefront 2 ended, but EA shot down the idea due to licensing costs.

At least we had the two PSP spin-offs.

That hasn’t dissuaded fans, however. With Battlefront 2 seeing a major resurgence in players, likely spurred on by Andor, Fortnite, and the 20th anniversary of Revenge of the Sith, petitions have started up again calling on EA and Disney to finally make Battlefront 3.

“Players have been eagerly awaiting a sequel,” Dan Merc wrote in their petition, which they’ve been shopping around various subreddits. “Fast forward to 2025, and we have been left without any glimpse of a new chapter in this beloved franchise. It’s clear that the demand is sky-high. EA Games, in collaboration with Disney, has the unique opportunity to reignite this excitement by developing Star Wars: Battlefront 3.”

A Petition Won’t Do Anything, But There’s Clearly A Hunger For More Battlefront

It captures a sentiment I’m sure many Star Wars fans are feeling, especially given how many are diving back into Battlefront 2, but there have been countless petitions like this, and they’re unlikely to do anything. Especially not with just 700 signatures. “You need to find $500m and a petition that has tens of millions [of] signatures. We’ve been through this many times,” u/AZZATRU put it bluntly.

No amount of begging will bring the game [back].

Even then, DICE, along with several other studios at EA, are busy squirreling away on Battlefield 6. If we’re ever getting a Battlefront 3, it’s a long way off. But one glance at the series’ subreddit, and you’ll see that it’s all anyone is talking about. In fact, the community was so persistent that moderators made an announcement that they will only “allow one active post at a time” about the topic.

It’s a shame that Battlefront 3 is likely just a pipe dream at this point, but between the incessant posting, petitions, and rising player count, it’s clear that there’s a niche in Star Wars that isn’t being filled right now. Maybe one day Battlefront will finally learn to count to three (hey, that’s Half-Life’s joke), but for now, you’ll have to make do with the criminally underrated 2017 game.
