Summary
- Oblivion Remastered still has room for improvements, and fans are letting Virtuos know what they’re unhappy with.
- The remaster has visual bugs and occasionally worse UI than the original release.
- There are also a couple of other non-visual bugs that need addressing.
The majority of us were overjoyed when we learned that Oblivion Remastered is essentially Unreal Engine 5 pulled over the old Creation Engine, allowing everyone to enjoy the familiar quirks of Oblivion, but with a new coat of paint.
Virtuos didn’t leave everything untouched—the studio reworked the levelling system to be less archaic, for example. There’s still potential for more improvements to be made to Oblivion Remastered, and players haven’t been shy about expressing their wants.
In a Reddit thread by the notable asthmatic WeezyWally regarding future patches, the Oblivion Remastered community flocked to the comments to suggest improvements. A lot of these suggestions are based on user interface, something that modders were quick to improve following the original release of Oblivion.
Room for Improvement
“Can we get subcategories in the inventory? Why do I need to scroll through all my ingredients to find a potion?” writes _SirSpacePickle. This is especially curious because Oblivion did originally have inventory subcategories, which were especially useful in situations like the one described above.
“Particle effects are f**ked. Light on self only works 50 per cent of the time, the other 50 per cent it appears for one revolution and disappears. If I use two invisibility potions in a row, or fast travel and enter a new cell while invisible, my character will stay invisible after the potion wears off, but not actually be invisible to NPCs,” comments Old-Change-3216.
These types of bugs make sense given Oblivion Remastered’s changes are primarily visual-based, which is an area where bugs are most likely to occur, besides the plethora of bugs we’ve come to accept over the last nineteen years.
“I just want the Staff of Worms to perform as advertised. Or rather not transform NPCs into actual worms,” says OfflineAbyss. The Staff of Worms has had a strange bug since release, where the reanimated corpse doesn’t move, but an invisible version of the reanimated NPC will still run around, but they can’t take or do damage.
“I just want a local map button, or defaulting to local map when I’m indoors…” writes Taronoth. Currently, Oblivion Remastered defaults to the world map even when the player is inside, meaning you have to scroll through each of the maps to see a map of the cell you’re currently inhabiting. In the original Oblivion, the map actually did default to the local version when indoors, so it’s strange that this has been changed.
As many people have mentioned, performance issues continue to plague the remaster. This is likely something that Virtous is prioritising in its post-launch support.
