New Job Listing Hints That Motive’s Iron Man Game Will Have Action RPG Elements

Summary

  • A new EA Motive job listing hints that the Iron Man game will have RPG elements.
  • It isn’t clear what exactly this means, but some speculate that it’ll have gadget upgrades similar to Marvel’s Spider-Man.

We haven’t heard much about EA Motive’s Iron Man game since it was announced in 2022. All we have is that generic shot of the red-and-gold suit pictured above. But in the years since its reveal, we’ve been able to glean some details from job listings, like that it appears to be open world, and now, that it’ll have RPG elements.

As spotted by u/OwnEquivalent4108 on the Gaming Leaks and Rumours subreddit, EA is looking to hire someone with “Experience in Singleplayer Action RPG games as a level designer and/or an avid player”. RPG elements could mean just about anything, but c’mon, we’re talking about Iron Man here. Hopefully, it means that Motive is cooking up a skill-tree that lets us fine-tune our suits. Picture something like Armored Core where you can customise not only how the mech looks, but each individual component like the boosters, weapons, and even OS.

Currently, we’re working on two exciting projects, an original Iron Man action-adventure game and what’s coming next for Battlefield.

The job listing also lays out what the role’s responsibilities will be, and one line in particular has fans thinking that the game won’t be open world after all, but instead split into linear sorties: “Design and build major singleplayer levels, within the project’s creative constraints.” Granted, level designers are of course hired for open world games, and this could be referring to missions within an open world. So, maybe the game will juggle both approaches.

Iron Man Is Being Developed In Unreal Engine 5

Details are incredibly scarce, to say the least. It may or may not be open world, and it has RPG elements, which is a buzzword thrown around all the time to mean countless different things. But we do know one thing for certain: it’s being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and that was reiterated in today’s job listing.

It’s not much, but once again, EA Motive stated that it wants someone who has “Familiarity with the Unreal game engine”. Though it’s understandable that Motive is keeping quiet about how the project is coming along, since it’s likely still a few years away from launching. Motive’s general manager, Patrick Klaus, confirmed in 2022 that the game had only just entered pre-production, so at the time of its reveal, it was in the very early stages of development.

Many speculate that it will be similar to Insomniac’s Spider-Man, with the RPG elements referring to gadget upgrades, given Stark’s penchant for technology. But Klaus said that the studio’s mission was to “have differentiators from some of these other Marvel games or existing action RPG games”, and that Iron Man had to be “fresh” and “unique”.

It’s all up for speculation right now. In the meantime, we have Marvel 1943 to look forward to, which was just delayed into early 2026.
