Summary
- EVO Japan has seen yet more problems due to the frequency of which PS5s are overheating during matches.
- Punk blamed the PS5 for his defeat in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, while a player called RedDitto claimed the PS5 was “melting” his adapter during the Guilty Gear Strive grand finals.
- Once again, there are now calls for EVO to switch back to Xbox and PC, but since it’s a Sony backed event, that probably isn’t going to happen soon.
EVO Japan finals took place a couple of days ago, and to say that there was a bit of controversy would be an understatement. Despite there being a few problems during the event, complaints surrounding overheating PS5s really kicked off when Victor Woodley (more commonly known as Punk) blamed the PS5 for his defeat in the Fatal Fury: City of Wolves tournament.
Punk claimed that he had issues with his controller mid-match, which caused the defeat, and then took to Twitter to vent, going as far as to say in a now-deleted tweet that he would “personally stop attending tournaments” if the issue wasn’t addressed. His reasoning is that he shouldn’t have the outcome of a set be out of his control after “tons of hours practicing, traveling, spending money to go to these events”.
EVO Japan Finals Seemingly Ruined By Overheating PS5s
Twitter being Twitter, many dismissed Punk’s complaints as him being a “sore loser” and went about their day, only for the issue to rear its head once again at the Guilty Gear Strive grand finals. A Twitter user called Dany El Maza was able to record footage of a finals fight between RedDitto and Daru, in which RedDitto stopped moving after being pressured in the corner.
The fight was then seemingly paused mid-match to figure out the problem, during which RedDitto claimed that the overheating PS5 was “melting” his controller’s adapter. Eventually, the problem was fixed after another fighting game player called Tiger_Pop let RedDitto borrow his adapter, but he did eventually go on to lose the fight in controversial fashion.
The whole thing has been a bit of a mess for EVO and PlayStation, as Sony is the one that sponsors the tournament these days. That’s most likely the main reason why PS5s are primarily used, but there are now once again calls from many to switch to Xbox and PC to stop things happening like this in the future.
