Stardew Valley Creator Could Save Hytale From Cancellation

Stardew Valley creator ConcernedApe has reportedly indicated that he would be up for reviving Hytale, but there is a catch – he wants to know what went wrong first.

This comes after Hytale – an MMO that could have rivalled Minecraft – was cancelled. It isn’t exactly clear why this has happened just yet, but one developer blamed the team’s leadership.

Hytale Fans Are Eager To Find A New Developer

As spotted by GamesRadar+, one of the advocates of the #SaveHytale campaign shared a screenshot of what appears to be an exchange with ConcernedApe, real name Eric Barone, in their Discord server. Here, a fan tries to convince Barone to take over Hytale’s development, considering how many fans were eagerly awaiting its launch.

Barone said that he could “possibly” see the benefit of taking on the challenge, but not without further details. “I would have to hear more about what the plan is, why it failed initially (behind the scenes), etc,” he is quoted as saying in the Discord server.

Developer Hypixel Studios has been vague about what went wrong with Hytale’s development, but did offer something of an explanation when announcing the game’s cancellation.

“Our technical ambitions grew more complex, and even after a major reboot of the game engine, the team found that Hytale still wasn’t as far along as it needed to be,” the statement reads. “We looked at reducing scope, adjusting timelines, and finding new angles to keep moving forward. But each of those options would have meant compromising on what made Hytale special in the first place. It wouldn’t have been the game we set out to make. And it wouldn’t have been the game you deserve.”

In the meantime, the future of Hytale looks pretty bleak. Hypixel Studios was acquired by Riot Games in 2020, but there’s no indication that the company is planning on reviving Hytale under a different team. Still, it owns the Hytale IP, so any attempt to get it off the ground again would have it go through it.
