Should You Build A Spike Strip In Grounded 2?

As you’re progressing through the early main quest missions in Grounded 2, you’ll eventually be required to build a Spike Strip for The Art of War mission. While Spike Strips are billed as a massive advantage for protecting your base, they’re also the trigger for O.R.C. bugs to attack your designated location, marked by where you place your Spike Strip.

Depending on your goals, available gear, and level of preparation, raids might barely be more than an inconvenience, or could be a fight for your life, especially as the challenge ramps up after each wave. We weigh the pros and cons of Spike Strips, plus explain how to build these defenses.

What Are Spike Strips & How Do You Build Them?

The Spike Strip selected on a Crafting Wheel in Grounded 2.

Spike Strips are small, horizontally placed Weed Stems fortified with spikes, allowing them to serve as defensive barriers you can place around your Grounded 2 base or encampment.

You can craft these items via the crafting wheel, which includes furniture and other major building options, like the workbench.

The Spike Strip is easy to build and uses ingredients that are found in plentiful supply across the park, so you won’t have much difficulty in stocking up on plenty of materials.

To craft a Spike Strip, you’ll need:

  • One Weed Stem
  • One Sap
  • One Crude Rope
  • Three Thistle Needles

However, just because you can easily amass the materials required to protect your base with dozens of Spike Strip traps, doesn’t necessarily mean you should.

Crafting and placing a Spike Strip will trigger O.R.C. bug raids, featuring soldiers of tough bug enemies deployed by the mysterious stranger who has been terrorizing both you and Ominent.

The screen darkens to indicate Invaders Incoming in Grounded 2.

These raids are indicated by the occasional messages that appear, which turn your screen a dark shade of purple, and include an hourglass to indicate how much time you have before the raid is triggered.

At least three messages appear to indicate the countdown progress, so you have ample time to prepare, if needed.

On the plus side, these raids are excellent sources of rare bug parts and Orc receivers, both of which can be incredibly helpful for satisfying your crafting needs.

On the downside, these raids are extremely annoying and can include several strong bugs, like Bombardier Beetles, which can inflict massive acid damage to you and your buggies, and even damage your base.

Overall, it’s not worth using Spike Strips unless you want to farm bug parts and are well-equipped to repel the attacks or have friends with you who can help in case something goes wrong.
