Blizzard Is Reportedly Giving One Of Its Games A Netflix Adaptation

Summary

  • It’s rumoured that a Blizzard game is getting a Netflix adaptation.
  • Blizzard and Netflix were reportedly in talks for an adaptation sometime around 2020, but this was said to have fallen through due to legal issues.
  • Diablo and Overwatch were previously brought up as contenders for the Netflix adaptation.

A Blizzard game could be next in line for a Netflix adaptation, following on from countless titles before them.

This is according to journalist Jez Corden, speaking on the Xbox Two podcast. Here, he says that a Blizzard series is set to get “the Netflix treatment”, although he won’t confirm which one it is.

Overwatch, Diablo, Or Another Blizzard Game Could Be Getitng A Netflix Show

“I’m not going to say what game it is, but there’s a Blizzard franchise that’s getting some kind of Netflix treatment,” Corden says on the podcast, in a segment spotted by ResetEra user Tommy Showbiz. He doesn’t give us much else to go on, but he does mention that the show could be announced at BlizzCon, which isn’t until September 2026.

It’s worth noting that this is not the first time we have heard of some kind of partnership between Blizzard and Netflix. Last September, it was reported that the two companies were in talks some time ago, but the deal fell through in 2020 when Blizzard sued Netflix. This lawsuit was over Netflix allegedly “poaching” a Blizzard executive. Back in 2020, it was also rumoured that Diablo and Overwatch shows were in the works, so this does check out.

So, if talks are back on track, then it would seem that Diablo and Overwatch are likely contenders for the adaptations, presuming that’s still what Blizzard is after. The latter might make the most sense since Overwatch 2 has found itself losing players to Marvel Rivals, and a popular Netflix show could breathe new life into the community as well as bring in new fans.

We’ve seen this with other games before. Fallout was among the most recent, with all the games seeing a boost in players after the Prime Video show proved to be a hit. Similarly, The Last Of Us Part 1 sales shot up by more than 200 percent after the first season of the TV show dropped. Cyberpunk 2077 also got a bump in sales after the Edgerunners anime, although this was the same year as the next-gen update.
