Expedition 33’s Charlie Cox Felt “Like A Total Fraud” After All The Praise

Daredevil actor Charlie Cox made his video game debut earlier this year in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 as Gustave, who quickly became a fan-favourite character in what was already a star-studded game comprised of icons like Baldur’s Gate 3 and Final Fantasy 16’s own Jennifer English and Ben Starr. But amidst all of the praise the game and Cox have been getting, he feels like a “total fraud”.

As reported by GamesRadar, he recently spoke at the Washington State Summer Con about his experience working on the new turn-based French RPG, explaining that he spent very little time in the booth despite being lauded for the game’s enormous success.

Apparently the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer. I have no idea, I haven’t played it.

“I don’t mean to minimise it in any way, and it’s so cool. Apparently the game is awesome. I’m not a gamer. I have no idea, I haven’t played it,” Cox said. “My agent asked me if I wanted to go and do a voice-over. I was in the studio for four hours, maybe. And people keep saying how amazing it is and congratulations, and I feel like a total fraud.”

Charlie Cox Made His Character An Icon In Only Four Hours

Typically, when working on a game, actors are shovelled into a booth and handed the script, with a director giving notes between takes, giving them little time to rehearse and get to grips with whatever character they’re playing. Just look at Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree: his legendary performance might have cemented him as a FromSoftware staple from the jump, but Igon actor Richard Charles Lintern wasn’t even aware that Bayle was a dragon.

Mark Hamill also forgot that he was Majima in the first Yakuza game’s English dub.

Still, four hours is unordinarily quick work. As GamesRadar notes, Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2’s Tom McKay, the voice behind Henry, spent over 500 hours recording voice lines. Granted, he is the leading character, but arguably so was Charlie Cox — at least until the end of the first act.

He might not have spent long with developer Sandfall Interactive, or in the role of Gustave, but Cox has nothing but kind words for the studio. “I’m so thrilled for the company,” he said. “I’m thrilled it did really well.”
