CD Projekt Red keeps waving goodbye to Cyberpunk 2077… and then dropping another update anyway. Last time, I was so sure that it would be the final final update, as the devs improved photo mode, character creation, and added some new features. However, we now know that this wasn’t the case, as Patch 2.3 is coming later this month.
Now, as speculation swirls that The Witcher 3 is getting another expansion after more than ten years since its launch, some fans speculate that Cyberpunk 2077 could be getting the same treatment. After all, the game is in a very good place right now, and I don’t think many of us are ready to see the last of V and Johnny just yet.
Could CDPR Have Another Cyberpunk 2077 Expansion In The Works? Fans Sure Hope So
For anyone out of the loop, Cyberpunk 2077 was always supposed to get two expansions. This was reduced to just one, Phantom Liberty, which launched in 2023. This was decided after the base game’s disastrous launch, with resources going into various updates to improve that rather than creating anything new.
However, following on from these fixes, a successful Netflix show, and eventually Phantom Liberty itself, this poor launch is all but forgotten by many fans. So, it’s easy to see why some fans believe that we will get that second expansion after all.
“Phantom Liberty was a resounding success, and they contracted an external company [Virtuos] to learn their engine and start releasing patches,” says Reddit user AcceptableHamster149. “Hands up if you think that one of the unannounced projects that they spoke about during the annual earnings call is the fabled 2nd expansion.”
“I would gladly pay for another Expansion,” adds kvacm, with many in agreement.
With that said, it is worth tempering our expectations. We already know that most of CDPR is either on The Witcher 4 or the next Cyberpunk 2077 game. So, unless an entire expansion has been outsourced to Virtuos, who now assists with updates, then the studio might not have the resources to make this a reality. In which case, the updates are just there to improve our replays, rather than gear us up for another mission.
In the meantime, we’ll have to wait and see what the new update has in store for us – and if this ends up being the final patch. It will go live on June 26, and we’re still waiting to hear what features it will introduce.
