Summary
- Epic and Iconic rarities are being introduced with Fabled.
- Enchanted is rarer than epics, but more common than iconics.
- Is rare still rare when there are six rarities rarer than it?
Disney Lorcana will soon be introducing even more rarities to its roster, as the upcoming expansion Fabled will be giving us two more rarer-than-rare tiers to hunt for.
Epic and iconic cards will both be rarer than legendary, pushing the total count of rarities up to seven with new foil and art treatments.
“Open-Air” Art Arrives With Epic Rares
Revealed in the Next Chapter livestream, Ravensburger revealed Fabled will include the two new rarities for the first time. The first of the two is epic, which sits between legendary and enchanted rares. Epic cards will feature “open-air” borderless art, rainbow foiling, and a similar spot-gloss treatment to what is already seen on legendary cards.
Crucially, the art in this tier is the existing art found on regular cards, simply expanded to eliminate the border. This opens it up to including reprints of older cards, such as The First Chapter’s Elsa, Snow Queen, which is being reprinted in Fabled as an epic.
Iconic, The New Rarest Of The Rares
The second rarity is iconic. Rarer than even enchanted, iconic cards use new art and a brand-new foil treatment that coats the card in glittering lore symbols and 3D hot stamp effects.
We don’t know how many cards in each set will be getting iconic cards, but so far only two have been confirmed for Fabled: Mickey Mouse, Brave Little Prince, and the accompanying Minnie Mouse card that has yet to be revealed. We’ve already likely seen the art for it though, as Mickey’s iconic art happens to be the key art for the Fabled set we saw a few months ago.
The new order of rarities:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Super Rare
- Legendary
- Epic
- Enchanted
- Iconic
The collation of epic and iconic rares hasn’t been revealed. We do know they’ll be filling the same slot in booster packs as foil cards and enchanted rares, but the exact pull rates for any specific rarity have never been confirmed by Ravensburger.
This might go a way to fixing one of the main problems I have with Lorcana at the moment: aside from a few rares in each set, most cards in most packs aren’t worth even the cost of the pack itself. They’re not seen in play outside of limited formats, and on the secondary market only the enchanted rares are often worth enough to make pulling them exciting. Perhaps two new rarities will add a bit of diversity to pulls, and make buying booster packs over just the singles for the in-vogue cards actually worthwhile.
Fabled, with these two new rarities, is launching on September 5, after a prerelease on August 29.
