The one thing I’ve never been able to nail down in Elden Ring is the Two Fingers and the Greater Will. It’s a side of the lore that completely confounds me. I thought I was getting a handle on the concept (mostly thanks to VaatiVidya’s extensive breakdowns), but then came crashing Shadow of the Erdtree with its Mother of Fingers.
From what I can gather, Metyr was the first ‘meteorite’ to hit the Lands Between, or rather, the Greater Will’s first envoy. At some point, they gave birth to each of the Two Fingers, who were supposed to guide the empyreans, but Metyr was cut off from the Greater Will and began to birth those creepy finger spiders instead. That means everything passed onto Marika and the Lands Between from the Greater Will was completely made up.
That all seems pretty self-explanatory: the Two Fingers are children of Metyr, the Mother of Fingers. It makes sense.
Not if you listen to u/Scum_Mage_Infa, who takes ‘birth’ to mean something far less literal. At least in the case of Ranni’s Two Fingers. They think that the Two Fingers found under the Cathedral of Manus Celes are not Metyr’s children… but her genitals. I’m going to try and wrap my head around the theory, digest it, regret the life choices that led me to writing about Elden Ring genitals, and then explain it in laypeople’s terms, but they also made it into an hour-and-a-half video, so we’ll see how I do.
The Two Fingers Might Have Been Cut Off From Metyr
They theorise that Metyr was “castrated” and that the evidence can be seen plainly on Ranni’s Two Fingers; their texture is more akin to Metyr than the other Two Fingers we find in the game, and they have a “strange hole” on the back of their ‘hand’, which u/Scum_Mage_Infa argues lines up “near perfectly with Metyr’s birthing hole on her prolapsed chest”.
Ranni’s Two Fingers are the only ones not found at a Divine Tower, aside from the ones in the Roundtable Hold.
“As further evidence of this being a birthing hole, I think this was a long-term plan that was part of Ranni’s rebirth as she is sitting by this birthing hole completely naked, in a position I have many times associated with spiritual transferal,” u/Scum_Mage_Infa explains.
In all seriousness, it’s a well-thought-out theory that even extends to Metyr laying siege to Stormveil Castle, tying into some truly FromSoftware-sounding themes. It’s amazing what fans can conjure up from details as minuscule as skin texture on deceased fingers, puzzling together their own stories within this world, and even if it does boil down to the Two Fingers being genitals, it’s an impressive bit of detective work. Just never make me read the words “Metyr’s birthing hole” again, thanks.
