Godzilla has been an ever-constantly beloved and popular character in all forms of media and pop culture since his first appearance in 1954. The King of the Kaiju has appeared in several films, comic books, anime, and video games. However, movies are the most popular Godzilla medium.

Updated On May 8, 2025, by Emily McElroy: With 37 films released across Japan and the United States, and two more in the works, Godzilla isn’t ready to give up his crown as King of the Monsters. But have you ever wondered which versions of Godzilla is the King of Kings? Look no further: these are the strongest versions of Godzilla we’ve seen across the franchise.

The Hero Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (1974, 1 hour, 24 minutes)
You know what the saying is: the enemy of my enemy is my friend. In Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, a group of dangerous and highly-advanced aliens have shown up to terrorize the earth. A prophecy declares that in the world’s darkest moment, a monster will save them. Now, where can we find a monster?
That’s right: this movie has Godzilla in a protagonist roll. For once, the King of Monsters is on the side of humanity. Well, kind of. He mostly just doesn’t want the world destroyed – he lives here. But this Godzilla shows his power by putting it to good use. This Godzilla proves that if you have to have a rampaging monster around, you’d rather have it as a friend than a foe.

The Original Godzilla
Godzilla (1954, 96 minutes)
The franchise has been filled with countless monsters and foes and other dangerous beasties- but you can’t beat the classics. He may not be the biggest, but he certainly is one of the baddest: the Original Godzilla himself.
When Godzilla smashed his way onto the screen in 1954, nobody had ever the likes of him before. This film is renowned for its surprisingly dark and gloomy atmosphere, and of course it is remembered for introducing the King of Monsters to us all. This Godzilla may not be as large as later versions, but he still gets plenty of damage in. Make no mistake: 1954’s Godzilla is a horror film, and this monster is a horrific creature of strength.

Flying Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Hedorah (1971, 85 minutes)
Godzilla vs. Hedorah is an…interesting film in the franchise for a lot of reasons. The premise, for one, is unique: a pollution-eating monster has shown up to terrorize humanity, and it’s up to scientists and a really annoyed Godzilla to put a stop to this.

Battra To The Bone
This movie gets a bit silly at times, with the premise being a bit hard to swallow. But what sets this Godzilla apart is the power he, and he alone, shows: he can fly. Godzilla uses his atomic breath near the end of the film to fly after Hedorah to finish her off. No other Godzilla has ever flown, making this aerodynamic abomination a particular threat to watch out for.13

Death Battle Godzilla
Godzilla Vs. Gamera (2014, 19 minutes, 20 seconds)
If you’ve been on YouTube in the past decade, you’ve likely come across a series known as Death Battle. The premise is simple: The creators take and analyze two characters that are similar in certain ways, make them fight, and then decide on a winner. Since Godzilla has been fighting since his inception, it wasn’t long before they put him up against another movie monster star, Gamera.
The video takes into account many of Godzilla’s established abilities at the time, combining multiple films and versions to state a point. It then has him go up against a monster that is written to be more of a protector than the force of nature, which is Godzilla. We get to see our favorite radioactive giant lizard take on a giant turtle built for speed and defense and watch as he gets blown into giant turtle soup chunks.
9
Minus Godzilla
Godzilla Minus One (2023, 2 hours, 5 minutes)
The Minus Godzilla from the Godzilla Minus One film is easily the most menacing and cool-looking version of the character in terms of his simple base reptilian features and biology. However, the Minus One Godzilla looks the part of a giant reptilian kaiju that is considered the king of monsters. This iteration has very pronounced and menacing spinal plates along the line of his back that look more like weapons than they do on any other version of the character.
This version is also one of the smaller iterations of the character, but that does not take away from its destructive abilities. The Minus Godzilla has all the capabilities you would expect from the king of monsters. However, what sets this version apart is how menacing he looks. Weapon-like spinal plates, plated scales, powerful limbs, vicious teeth, and claws give the minus Godzilla one of the most fitting looks for a creature known as the King of Monsters.
8
Shin Godzilla
Shin Godzilla (2016, 2 hours)
The Shin Godzilla is one of the smallest and most unique-looking iterations of the character from the Shin Godzilla movie. This version of the King of Monsters has a more horrific and unsettling look to it. However, its odd appearance and smaller size certainly don’t take away from the devastation that this monster can cause.
This more unsettling iteration of the character quickly took care of everything thrown at it monstrously. However, the Shin Godzilla only ever came up against human foes. Although their weapons were impressive, Godzilla’s clear superiority meant that there was no real test for him and no way to gauge the upper limits of his power, not to mention the long cool-down time he needed between attacks.
7
Millennium Godzilla
Godzilla 2000 (1999, 1 hour, 48 minutes)
The Millennium Godzilla is the version of the monster seen in the movie Godzilla 2000: Millennium, released in 1999. The movie itself has a decent plot and some great action sequences. Although this film is the 24th addition to the Godzilla series by Toho Pictures, it ignores many continuity details from previous films and establishes itself as a separate entity.

Godzilla: 10 Greatest Crossovers
Godzilla has collaborated with a lot of series and brands over the years, but these are his greatest crossovers.
The Millennium Godzilla performs many extraordinary feats, as expected from the gigantic king of monsters. It has two different breath attacks, including its atomic and spiral breath, which can dispatch almost any foe with a single dose of the attacks. This version of Godzilla is also incredibly strong, even for its massive size, capable of destroying massive structures and even picking up and throwing objects weighing up to 30,000 tons. The Millennium Godzilla also has incredibly menacing physical features like claws, teeth, protruding back spikes, and skin nearly impervious to all forms of damage.
6
Space Godzilla
Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla (1994, 1 hour, 47 minutes)
Years after Godzilla had been rampaging and fighting all sorts of monsters, we get to see that there was another Godzilla out in the universe: Space Godzilla. Looking like Earth’s very own towering beast, Space Godzilla is a cloned version of him defined by large crystal growth and an overall purple aura. He lands on Earth and wastes no time in causing untold devastation.
Godzilla is understandably caught off-guard by this space version of himself with surprising strength and energy he’s never encountered before. Space Godzilla is easily able to defeat both Godzilla and the human-made Moguera, forcing the two of them to team up against a common foe. No wonder space is the final frontier; it has monsters like Space Godzilla standing guard.
5
Final Wars Godzilla
Godzilla: Final Wars (2004, 2 hours, 5 minutes)
Final Wars Godzilla is seen in the Godzilla: Final Wars film as one of the most formidable versions of Godzilla in movies. While he may not be the biggest, this version of Godzilla still has awe-inspiring destructive abilities and high resistance to enemy attacks. However, what sets this monster apart from other versions is his intelligence.
Everything in the Final Wars Godzilla does seems to have conscious thought behind it. He uses this strategy to target important structures, destabilizing and disorienting human attempts at subduing them. It also targets precise, weak points when it comes to other kaiju. Although it may not be the most destructive or the biggest, a giant kaiju king purposefully targeting humanity’s power sources and weak points with little resistance certainly makes it one of the most potent versions anyone has seen.
4
The Burning Godzilla
Godzilla vs. Destoroyah (1995, 1 hour, 43 minutes)
The Burning Godzilla from Godzilla vs Destroyah had one of the more tragic portrayals of the character we have seen. This story follows a supercharged version of the king of monsters, who, after being exposed to a hidden uranium deposit during a volcanic eruption, becomes supercharged, unstable, and critical.
This version of Godzilla becomes a danger to the entire planet, and humanity must find a way to contend with his might and get rid of him. Although on the verge of going nuclear, the Burning Godzilla has a lot of benefits from being exposed to high radiation levels. His ordinarily blue energy turns red, and he even glows a reddish-orange color through his skin and eyes, making him one of the coolest-looking iterations of the character. All of his attacks and powers are scaled up quite a bit, and simply by existing, this version of Godzilla is a danger to his entire planet, making him a very dangerous version of the character.
