Arrowhead Studios has wasted no time in releasing the Heart of Democracy major update for Helldivers 2, following the failure of humanity to protect the planets surrounding their home world of Super Earth.
Helldivers were originally tasked with defending the planets immediately surrounding Super Earth, but humanity’s brave soldiers proved no match for the relentless Illuminate threat.
Now, humanity has been pushed to its last bastion of defence, the very neighbourhoods they grew up playing in, the streets of Super Earth itself. The directive is simple: fight for every inch of Super Earth and repel the alien invasion by all means necessary.
Super Earth Cannot Fall
Heart of Democracy adds several features to Helldivers 2 to enhance the experience of fighting the Illuminate on humanity’s home planet. A big addition is that you’ll now encounter AI squads of infantry fighting the Illuminate. These squads are AI-controlled, but can be assigned to follow players to aid in taking objectives and such.
You’ll also encounter civilians, whom you are sworn to protect at all costs. The blog post released by Arrowhead points out that you’ll be punished if civilians end up dying as a result of friendly fire. So, as always, be careful where you deploy those carpet bombs.
Arrowhead released a video to coincide with the release of Heart of Democracy, a propaganda piece for managed democracy. The inspiring speech in the video parodies Winston Churchill’s “we shall fight on the beaches” speech in typical Super Earth style: “We will turn our streets into our battlefield, our playgrounds into our theatre of war, we will form the clenched fist of democracy…”
It’s not clear how long we’ll be fighting on Super Earth, or what Arrowhead’s plans are for the post-invasion. If the major order fails, where will humanity escape to? Will we have to build a new Super Earth somewhere in the cosmos? That’s unthinkable, which is why we need every lapsed helldiver to mobilise and re-join the fight. Super Earth cannot fall.
