Marvel Rivals Dev Says There Should Be “Harsher Penalties” For Leavers And Throwers

Summary

  • Chronos Shields can now be unlocked via event-based missions.
  • Fans are worried that this will encourage people to throw in ranked.
  • Executive producer Danny Koo denies this, but agrees that throwers do need to be punished more severely.

The Chronos Shield system has been in Marvel Rivals since launch, allowing players to avoid deranking once the shield is fully charged. Until recently, the only way to charge it was by losing, so you were still guaranteed to lose some of your progression by the time it came in to protect your rank.

However, a recent update has changed that completely. Now, players can unlock Chronos Shield Cards by competent event-based missions This gives you an instant Chronos Shield, meaning that you can suffer a loss without consequence. Fans are not pleased with this, and are fearful that it will only encourage throwers and rage quitters to ruin competitive games for everyone else.

Despite these fears, it doesn’t seem that the Marvel Rivals devs think this will be a problem at all. Replying to a fan, executive producer Danny Koo argues that leavers will always plague the game, but admits that harsher penalties are being considered.

Marvel Rivals Will Start To Come Down Harder On Throwers

But don’t expect Chronos Shield Cards to go anywhere anytime soon

This was spotted by Marvel Rivals Intel, who highlighted this recent comment from Koo in light of the backlash against Chronos Shield Cards.

“With or without, [there] will be throwers,” says Koo. “There is [an] in-game reporting option for that. Chrono shield already existed in rank since day 1. This works the same way.”

As Koo also highlights, Chronos Shields only work up until Gold rank.

In a follow-up, he does admit that more can be done against throwers. “I think there should be harsher penalty for throwers for sure,” he says. “Requires further discussions.”

Lastly, he reassures players that these cards cannot be purchased, so that should mean that NetEase has no plans to add them to the store. If they did, it’s pretty hard to see how that wouldn’t just be straight up pay-to-win. As it stands, you can only get them through Galacta’s Gift missions.
