Things are not going too great for A Minecraft Movie. While it’s making a whole lot of money, it has premiered to extremely negative word of mouth. Critics hate it, many fans aren’t loving it, and now, the full film is being shared around on social media.
Well, sort of. There is a version of A Minecraft Movie being shared around through various file hosting sites, but it isn’t the cut that you’ll see in theatres. No, instead, fans are watching an older version of the film with unfinished CGI, which somehow made its way into the wild.
Screenshots and videos are being taken down by rights holders, but the film is out there
Images and videos started circulating on social media after one person claimed to be watching an unfinished cut in the cinema. However, they have since admitted to pirating it, and true enough, it is quite easy to find a link to this version of the film online.
Rights holders have started taking the videos and screenshots down, but they’re still being shared. While it is completely unfair to judge the quality of Minecraft based on how it looked during production – in a state that even the best-looking films go through before release – it’s just more negative PR for a movie that really doesn’t need it. And, of course, even if it doesn’t look great, it’s still a way for fans to watch the full film for free, which isn’t exactly what you want as we head into the opening weekend.
Right now, it’s unclear who originally leaked this version of the film and how they got their hands on it in the first place. However, this is far from the first film that this has happened to, so it’s not unique to Minecraft – just yet another bump in the road.
