Monster Hunter Wilds Fans Are Discussing Slay Vs Capture Etiquette

Summary

  • A Monster Hunter Wilds player was recently booted from a party for capturing a monster, which has ignited a discussion over capture versus slaying etiquette.
  • For many, slaying the monster is the default, as they just go into fights to wail on a big monster, while other reckon the is down to the party leader to communicate if they want to capture.
  • In fact, one person has suggested that players should be able to posts quests with clear instructions as to whether the party is going for a capture or a kill.

Monster Hunter is arguably more popular than ever right now, with Monster Hunter Wilds looking like it has built on the popularity of World very successfully. Having now reached over 10 million players in its first month, there are more than a few newcomers to the series in the number, and a few are running into some problems when it comes to multiplayer etiquette.

A Reddit user called Killertofu808 is one such newcomer that was confused about the etiquette surrounding whether to capture or slay monsters. In their post on the Monster Hunter Wilds subreddit, they reveal that when they captured a monster, the party leader demanded that they be the one to decide if they capture or kill a monster. They then seemingly kicked Killertofu808 out of the hunting party for their mistake.

Monster Hunter Wilds Fans Are Discussing Slay Vs Capture Etiquette

The post has since popped off on the subreddit, igniting discussion surrounding the etiquette of capturing versus slaying a monster, and there is a fairly wide amount of opinion on the matter. One of the more common is expressed by a user called TheBostonKremeDonut, who argues that the standard practice should be to slay unless told not to by the party leader.

The Monster Hunter Wilds endgame just got a lot sweeter.

Another user called ZahhaK_00 echoes that sentiment, by claiming that they always assume they’re in a party to kill a monster because they “just want to beat the s*** out of the monster”. That is proper caveman behavior and I truly respect it.

A user called Ikishoten goes one step further and puts the responsibility entirely on the party leader, claiming that it’s “an unwritten rule” and is typically courteous to go along with whatever the party leader wants, but stresses that rewards for slaying and capturing are so similar in Wilds that it’s not worth stressing over. The only exception to this rule is when the party has carted too much, and a capture gets things over with quicker and avoids a fail.

Now you’re up-to-date with your Monster Hunter etiquette, you can jump into a party whenever you like without worrying about potentially upsetting someone. In fact, TheBostonKremeDonut makes a pretty cool suggestion that Capcom should let players post quests and specifically mention whether they’re there for a capture or kill to solve the problem entirely. Maybe we’ll get it in another future update.
