It’s been a hot minute since we last got a game from Naughty Dog, as you have to go all the way back to 2020 and The Last of Us Part 2 for the last title released by the studio. We know there have been struggles during the five years since, including a failed attempt at a live-service game set in the universe of The Last of Us, but it now seems like the studio is back on track, with the announcement of its next project, Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet, last year.
Naughty Dog likes to take its time with its games, rarely having two projects on the go at once, so most of us assumed back when Intergalactic was announced that it would be all hands on deck until release. However, that doesn’t appear to be the case this time around, as Naughty Dog CEO and The Last of Us Part 2 director Neil Druckmann has revealed a second title is in the works alongside Intergalactic.
Naughty Dog Is Working On A Second Game Alongside Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet
In the latest episode of the Press X To Continue podcast, Druckmann reveals that Intergalactic isn’t the only game in development at Naughty Dog at the moment. From Druckmann’s comments, it sounds as though this project may be smaller, and have a separate team, as he reveals he has more of a hands-off role this time around.
“There’s another game that’s being worked on at Naughty Dog where I am more of a producer role, and I get to mentor, and watch this other team, and give feedback, and be this executive in the room.”
Now, I know what you’re all thinking, but I am going to shoot down the elephant in the room. Druckmann himself isn’t on the project, which means we can probably rule out something massive like The Last of Us 3 or another Uncharted, as you’d imagine the CEO of Naughty Dog would want to be involved in those titles. Plus, it sounds as though Naughty Dog might even be done with The Last of Us entirely.
It’s possible that this title could be that long-rumored fantasy title that leaked a while ago. It was claimed way back in 2022 that a game with a fantasy setting was in the works that is separate from projects that Druckmann is working on, and his recent comments about having more of a producer role on this mystery title do back that up.
In any case, it’s nice to hear that Naughty Dog has multiple projects on the go, so hopefully, we won’t be waiting another five years after Intergalactic launches to see the studio release another game.
