Forget New Cards, Pokemon Pocket’s New Update Adds More Deck Slots

We’re on the eve of a brand new Pokemon Pocket set release. It’s basically Gamer Christmas, as we celebrate the day Pikachu was born in Pallet Town or something. Luckily (or unluckily if you want to collect ‘em all), Pokemon Pocket players get Gamer Christmas once a month, as new sets are added to the game.

However, this can come with its own problems. It’s hard to maintain your collection and keep up with the constant releases. If you’re free-to-play, your best bet is to pick a set that you really want to complete and focus on it rather than spreading your packs across every new release. This way, you’ll accrue more useful pack points to spend on your chase cards, and have a far better chance of completing a set.

I’d recommend pulling from Genetic Apex. Mostly because it has my favourite artwork, but also to get your hands on that immersive rare Mew card.

However, there are more problems that even pay-to-play players face. With more cards come more events, more strategies, and more decks to build. This becomes infuriating when you only have 15 deck slots to work with. However, that’s now changed.

Pokemon Pocket Players Are Getting More Deck Slots

Many players have been asking Pocket developer DeNa for more deck slots since the game was released. While this is ultimately a game about collecting cards, battling has become a huge part of its appeal. Events revolving around either Wonder Picking or battling reinforces this importance.

With so many cards, strategies, and synergies, however, players quickly filled up the 15 deck slots that the game launched with. They might build a custom deck specifically for the Gible Drop Event, for instance. I built a Palkia ex deck when I pulled its Crown Rare card so I could show it off, although I’ve only Mistyed the AI so far because I feel terrible about unleashing that broken monstrosity on real players.

It soon transpired that 15 slots for custom decks was not enough. With the release of more new sets, doubling the number of cards in the game and adding myriad viable strategies, players soon had to reckon with deleting some old favourites in order to make room for a new archetype. I’m a player who loves tweaking decks and trying off the wall strategies, so killing my darlings became a rite of passage for any new trial. I just made sure to make a note of the old one in case I ever wanted to come back to it.

With a ranked battle mode on the horizon, increasing the deck limit was more important than ever. The game is clearly shifting its focus to accommodate battle-oriented players, and they need the space to explore all the possibilities that these cards grant them.

Pokemon Pocket’s New Deck Limit

Pokemon Pocket now has a limit of 20 decks. It’s only an increase of five slots, but it’s vitally important. Firstly, it gives us five new decks to play with. On Gamer Christmas Eve, that allows us five potential decks from the new set – a more exciting prospect than the new cards contained within.

But it also tells players that DeNa is happy to increase this number over the coming months. This game is only five months old, so perhaps we can expect an increase to our deck limit twice a year? Maybe the cadence won’t be as rigid. But we know the developer is listening to our concerns. And that’s more important than any card in Shining Revelry.
