The leaks were accurate: SpongeBob SquarePants is going to be in Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds. Patrick is joining the roster too, and there’s even a SpongeBob-themed course, which we got a look at in the reveal trailer yesterday.
However, fans have spotted something much less exciting in this trailer – SpongeBob and Patrick are completely silent. Now, fans are worried that Tom Kenny and Bill Fagerbakke – or even sound-alikes for the actors – haven’t recorded any lines for the game, meaning we won’t hear anything from them during races.
SpongeBob And Patrick Are Silent In Their Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds Reveal Trailer
It is quite jarring in the trailer, as we hear plenty of noise from the other characters, but nothing from SpongeBob and Patrick (who are hardly known for being quiet). There aren’t even any lines or sounds taken from the show, so SpongeBob is without his iconic laugh.
Fans are not pleased with this, but some hold out hope that the sounds just haven’t been implemented yet, and all guest characters will be voiced at launch. We will just have to keep an ear out for these lines when we get new trailers, ahead of the game’s release on September 25.
There is also the possibility that the SAG-AFTRA strike prevented the actors from recording lines for the game. That strike has since been called off, potentially giving the devs time to get some lines into Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds before launch.
In any case, this adds to an already wild roster. During Summer Games Fest, it was confirmed that Hatsune Miku, Ichiban, Joker, and Minecraft characters will be playable racers. On top of that, this SpongeBob trailer revealed that there will also be a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover, so it looks like anything is on the table. It’s certainly attracted a lot of attention, helping to differentiate Sega’s upcoming racing game from Mario Kart World, a launch title for the Switch 2.
