Summary
- 1047’s CEO has responded to complaints about Splitgate 2’s monetisation.
- The price of the $80 bundle has been halved, with anyone who purchased it already being refunded the difference.
- He also defends the inclusion of a battle royale mode, stressing that it won’t be favoured over other modes.
Splitgate 2’s opening weekend has been memorable, to say the least. Kicking off with a new trailer at Summer Game Fest, 1047 Games’ CEO unveiled a battle royale mode, while wearing a “Make FPS Great Again” hat and taking a dig at Call of Duty. Then, players hit back against a $80 cosmetic bundle – which was on sale, with an original price of $145 – as they felt that this was antithetical to the developer’s message.
Now, 1047 is trying to win back some goodwill, and is making an immediate change in response to this player feedback. The first course of action will be amending the price of the offending bundle, which will be priced at $40 instead. Anyone who purchased it for $80 will have the difference refunded.
Splitgate 2 Devs Respond To Microtransaction Controversy
“The first thing I want to do is double down on being community first and listening to you guys, because you guys are the reason we’re here,” says 1047 CEO Ian Proulx. “We hear you loud and clear on the store prices. So that nano swarm bundle, we’re cutting the price in half. Some of the other items in the shop, we’re reducing prices across the board.
“We’re going to keep monitoring it, we’re going to keep listening, but that’s what we’re taking action on today.”
As previously mentioned, the full price was actually $145, and it was on sale for $80. We’ll have to wait and see if $40 is the permanent price or just the discount.
Proulx also addressed the pushback against the new battle royale mode, stressing that the devs value all of the modes equally. So, the team is eager to get across that it isn’t trying to push the community to play in any particular way.
We’ll have to wait and see how the community responds to this. Right now, the game still has mixed reviews on Steam, but there are plenty of fans praising the gameplay, even if they take issue with the monetisation.
Splitgate 2 is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
