Summary
- Revenge of the Sith’s return to theatres has brought its box office takings up to $900 million.
- This puts it just below Phantom Menace, which grossed more than $1 billion.
- This is despite Revenge of the Sith often being regarded as the superior prequel film.
Star Wars: Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith just returned to theatres for its twentieth anniversary. Despite the prequels being a laughing stock for some time, the kids who grew up with them are now adults and have a lot of fondness for them.
So, it’s no surprise to hear that Revenge of the Sith performed well at the box office, bringing its worldwide box office takings up to around $900 million. However, as impressive as this is, it isn’t enough to help it rise through the rankings compared to the other films in the series, and it currently sits behind what is commonly regarded as the worst Star Wars film ever released: The Phantom Menace.
Revenge Of The Sith Is A Hit, But Couldn’t Beat Phantom Menace
Star Wars: Episode 1 – The Phantom Menace has also enjoyed a renewal of popularity in recent years, but its critical evaluation hasn’t improved as much as Revenge of the Sith’s. Still, you can’t argue with the box office takings, as it’s made $1,046,513,456 in total, according to The Numbers.
The same site reports that Revenge of the Sith’s takings are now $899,665,673. This puts it above Star Wars: Episode 4 – A New Hope, but below Phantom Menace.
In case you’re curious, there’s the current ranking of all live-action Star Wars films by box office performance:
- The Force Awakens
- The Last Jedi
- The Rise of Skywalker
- Rogue One: A Star Wars Story
- The Phantom Menace
- Revenge of the Sith
- A New Hope
- Attack of the Clones
- The Empire Strikes Back
- Return of the Jedi
- Solo: A Star Wars Story
Looking at these charts, Revenge of the Sith being beaten by Phantom Menace does start to make sense, despite the former being more critically successful. The first entry in a new trilogy has always performed better than its sequels, which is understandable, since fans would have waited years for Star Wars to return when it came to Phantom Menace and The Force Awakens.
