Summary
- The Elder Scrolls Online is completely shaking up how builds work with new subclasses.
- At level 50, you’ll unlock the feature account-wide, and it will allow you to mix and match abilities from different skill trees.
- For instance, you could merge Sorcerer and Necromancer, or use Templar healing abilities as a Warden, all without having to start from scratch.
The Elder Scrolls Online fans have begged for an option to swap classes for over a decade now, as whenever a new skill tree is added, like Necromancer or Warden, you need to start from scratch to experience the latest content. Sacrificing that much progress in an MMO is daunting, but finally, there’s a solution.
As announced in the first-ever ESO Direct, Zenimax Online is finally adding subclasses, allowing you to mix and match skills to create entirely new, previously impossible builds without having to reroll your character. How this works is simple: you can swap two of your classes’ Skill Lines with any of those from the six other classes to form unique hybrids.
Unlocking subclasses is incredibly easy. There’s no questline to follow or a new faction to join, just one requirement — reach level 50.
Once you do, subclasses will be made available account-wide, meaning that you can use them on old and new characters, just as you would Champion Points. This will no doubt massively shake up the meta, as entirely new synergies will be made possible for the first time in the game’s 11-year history, so it’ll be fascinating to see how the community responds and what new builds emerge as a result.
Just imagine what a Sorcerer x Necromancer could do, or a pet build that mixes in Warden.
This also means that if Zenimax adds a new class in the future, you’ll be able to experiment with its abilities without hitting the big reset button. And unlike changing your character’s name or appearance, you won’t have to pay real money for tokens, as this feature is integrated into the game directly.
Seasons of the Worm Cult begins in June, continuing the original storyline on the Island of Solstice, and you can grab the Content Pack to unlock not only the first part of the new expansion, but both 2025 dungeon packs as well.
